Here are the top stories today in Denver:

  1. A growing number of local bars and restaurants have announced that customers need to present their vaccine cards to dine and drink. Westword has been kind enough to round up the latest list of businesses that require proof of vaccine. (Westword)
  2. A Department of Defense healthcare team was deployed to help hospital staff in northern Colorado. Hospitals there are at, or over, capacity, and healthcare workers are being stretched to their limit, public health officials said. The extra help has been a welcome relief. (CBS Denver)
  3. The new omicron variant, which has been linked to a surge of cases in South Africa, is "most definitely" already in the United States, said Dr. Scott Gottlieb, former head of the Food and Drug Administration. The variant has not yet been detected in Colorado, but people are urged to get their booster shots as soon as possible. (Patch)
  4. A behavioral health screening program at Planned Parenthood centers in metro Denver was successful, and it's set to be expanded statewide, the health plan organization Colorado Access said. Behavioral health related ER visits, anxiety and depression went up during the pandemic, particularly among teens and young adults, according to the JAMA psychiatry network. (Patch)
  5. It's beginning to look a lot like ... a dry desert? It's been 222 days without measurable snow in Denver, which means our city is just days away from topping the second and third longest consecutive runs without measurable snow. (FOX31 Denver)

I've spent the past nine years working for various news outlets across North America, including Chicago Patch, Global News and WBEZ. I've covered high-profile court cases, civil rights abuses, mass shootings, natural disasters and major crimes — but also countless happy news stories about kindness, innovation and resilience. When I'm not writing articles, I can be found hiking, snowboarding, debating politics with my husband and attempting to be a sci-fi and astronomy geek.
