📰 News we're reading

1. Gaytán elected as president of Denver school board for a second time (denvernorthstar.com) — Denver Public Schools has a familiar leader again, as Xóchitl Gaytán was elected to a second nonconsecutive term as president of the Denver school board in a secret-ballot vote. Her leadership comes as DPS faces declining enrollment, potential school closures, and a union-backed majority that will shape agendas and work closely with the superintendent.

2. Discover Denver citywide building survey moves to Northwest Denver (denvernorthstar.com) — Starting in early 2026, volunteers will fan out across Northwest Denver neighborhoods like Highland, Berkeley, and Sloan’s Lake to document buildings with historical and architectural significance. The Discover Denver survey invites residents to share stories and will put detailed information about every Denver building online for public access.

3. Denver's homeless access more services (denvergazette.com) — Denver officials report that more unhoused residents are getting sustained health and behavioral care, with an average of nine service encounters per person. The city is shifting shelter providers to performance-based contracts, tying funding to bed use, case management, and progress toward permanent housing. While exits to housing outpace returns to the street, leaders say voucher losses and long shelter stays remain major challenges.

4. HCA HealthOne staff surprises Colorado elementary students with new bikes (cbsnews.com) — Denver-area HCA HealthOne hospital staff helped surprise every second grader at Englewood’s Bishop Elementary with a brand-new bike and helmet, assembled that morning by Swedish Medical Center leaders. Kids practiced riding in the school gym due to weather, turning the space into a joyful, slightly chaotic training ground and leaving students with new skills, lasting memories, and handmade thank-you cards.

5. Colorado community rallies to rebuild after contractor betrayal (denver7.com) — A Denver couple is finally moving back into their longtime home after unsafe, unpermitted remodeling work left it gutted for two years and triggered a city stop‑work order. More than two dozen Denver-area businesses, coordinated by the Better Business Bureau’s Restoring Trust program, donated over $200,000 in labor and materials to rebuild the house safely and restore the family’s confidence in local contractors.
