Fugitive In Denver Federal Shooting IDed By Medical Examiner

Robert Martinez, 45, was shot dead in a car by a police officer in Denver. A woman who was also shot is still hospitalized.

DENVER, CO – The alleged fugitive shot during a federal action by U.S. Marshals in Denver's Valverde neighborhood on Feb. 1 was identified Monday by the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner.

Robert Martinez, 45, was injured in an officer-involved shooting Friday around 3 p.m. in the 200 block of South Canosa Court. A woman was also shot. Denver Police said the federal marshals were trying to "execute a warrant" when they tried to curb a car driven by the woman and then shot both her and Martinez inside the war.

A Jefferson County Sheriff's deputy, acting as part of a federal task force, fired his weapon and injured the woman and Martinez, who later died of his wounds. Denver police said two toddlers were in the car when the shooting took place.They were not injured.

The medical examiner's office said that the cause of Martinez's death had not been determined. Martinez later died at Denver Health Medical Center. The woman was still alive with "non life-threatening injuries," police tweeted Saturday.

Police said the attempted arrest was not immigration related, but did not elaborate on charges facing Martinez.

Martinez had a long record of criminal convictions, starting in the 90s including, burglary, robbery, kidnapping, attempted escape possession illegal drugs and parole violations, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation website. Most recently, he had been arrested in November, 2018 by the Denver Police Dept. on a trespassing charge. In 2015, he was arrested Edgewater in August of 2015 and held for federal illegal possession of firearm and ammunition charges.

The Denver police department is still investigating the shooting, along with the Aurora Police Critical Response Incident Team and the Denver District Attorney's Office, police said Friday.
