DENVER, CO – The identity of the man killed by Denver police after an hour-long standoff Monday night at an apartment building was identified Tuesday by the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner.

The coroner's office said David Litton, 36, was killed by gunshots in the 1200 block of North Galapago Street, near Speer Boulevard. The manner of death was declared a homicide.

The incident began around 10 p.m. when a neighbor called to report a disturbance involving someone threatening someone else with a gun on the fourth floor of the apartment building, said Division Chief Ron Saunier at a press conference late Monday night. Police dispatchers could hear what sounded like "someone crying" in the background, Saunier said.

Police arrived and tried to negotiate with Litton for more than an hour, at one point talking to him on the phone, Saunier said. Litton exited the apartment holding what "appeared to be a black handgun" Saunier said. As Litton walked toward the officers, multiple officers fired their weapons, injuring Litton. He was immediately taken to Denver Health Medical Center, where he eventually died of his wounds.

The officer-involved shooting will be investigated, according to Denver's protocol by the Aurora Police Department's Critical Incident Response Team, as well as the District Attorney's Office, Saunier said.
