📰 News we're reading

• Judge allows price hike for RTD disability transit program to take effect Jan. 1 (denverite.com) — Starting New Year’s Day, riders with disabilities in metro Denver will pay higher fares for RTD’s Access‑on‑Demand paratransit service after a federal judge declined to pause the changes. Advocates argue the hike and reduced subsidies betray 2024 ballot promises and harm disabled riders, while RTD says the optional program must be scaled back for financial sustainability. The dispute centers on how Denver’s transit system should equitably serve disabled residents.

• The fizzy journey of Champagne (denvergazette.com) — Denver’s historic Brown Palace Hotel is gearing up for New Year’s Eve with thousands of Champagne glasses and extra cases of Moët ready for midnight toasts downtown. Alongside this local tradition, the story traces Champagne’s evolution from French still wine to global celebration symbol, and notes how some Denver shoppers are shifting toward more affordable sparkling alternatives.

• Suspect accused of planting homemade explosive devices along trail in Denver area (denvergazette.com) — Police in Cherry Hills Village, on Denver’s south side, are asking for tips after several trash cans and sign posts along the High Line Canal Trail were damaged by what appear to be small homemade explosive devices. A thin-built male suspect using a high‑wattage e‑bike has been seen multiple times along the trail this month. Anyone with information is urged to contact Cherry Hills Village police online.
