DENVER, CO — A person is in custody after a Denver police officer was shot and wounded Tuesday evening, officials said. The officer was in plain clothes, without a protective vest, when he was shot in the back, police said.

Officers were called to South Knox Court and Kentucky Avenue just after 4 p.m. after they received a report of a dispute over a dog, according to Joe Montoya, division chief with the Denver Police Department.

Police were then called back to the same area just before 5:30 p.m. after they received a report of an armed person trying to get into a home, Montoya said.

The officer in plain clothes, who was part of the police department's Impact Team, arrived shortly after and was shot, authorities said.

The officer was hospitalized in stable condition, and he is expected to make a full recovery, police said.

The Impact Team, which includes a sergeant, officers and a mental health clinician, is a versatile unit that aims to support neighborhoods and officers with longer-term help, particularly after violent incidents.

Drivers were asked to avoid the area around South Knox Court and Kentucky Avenue while an investigation was underway.
