RTD R Line Derailment Injures Passenger In Aurora

One passenger was thrown from the train and others were injured in a derailment Monday morning in Aurora, police said.

AURORA, CO – A passenger was ejected from an RTD train and received serious injuries when an R-Line train derailed in downtown Aurora, Aurora Police said.

Denver7 reported Monday night that a woman was thrown from the train when a door popped off. The woman's foot was severed, witnesses told the station. Police and other passersby attended to the woman until she was taken to the hospital by Aurora Fire Rescue, police said.

Around 7:15 a.m., an RTD R-Line Light Rail train jumped the tracks at Sable Boulevard while making the turn to the west on Exposition Avenue. Other passengers had minor injuries. The woman thrown out of the train was in "stable" condition Monday afternoon, police said.

The Aurora Police Traffic Unit is investigating the incident along with RTD. Speed and weather conditions, due to the heavy snowfall, are factors being considered.

The intersection of Sable and Exposition was closed off to traffic.
