Suspicious Package Removed From Denver Capitol Building

A package wrapped in a US flag with "wires coming out of it" was removed by Denver Police bomb squad, authorities said.

DENVER, CO – Denver's State Capitol building was reopened Wednesday morning after Denver Police bomb squad officers removed a suspicious package near the west entrance, authorities said. Staffers who had been evacuated were allowed to return around 8:45 a.m.

The package was "about the size of a bread box" said Colorado State Patrol spokesman Trooper Gary Cutler. Cutler described the package as being "wrapped in a flag" and attached to another item with "wires coming out of it."

The package was first reported around 8:08 a.m. near the west side of the building, Cutler said. Officers blocked off the west steps and called in the bomb squad to investigate.

The package was determined to not be a danger, Cutler said and the building was re-opened for staffers.

"The case is still under investigation by Denver police," he said.
