Here are the top stories today in Denver:
- Denver ballot questions: Early election results show that voters approved $260 million for investments such as homeless services and parks, but rejected a proposal to upgrade the National Western Center. Voters also rejected several proposals backed by the chair of the Denver Republican Party, including stricter camping ban enforcement and a sales tax ceiling. (Newsline)
- The U.S. is far behind most other developed countries when it comes to maternal health, for reasons that are complex. A new index aims to pinpoint the key factors on a local level, and Denver ranks a lot better than many other cities in the nation. (Denver Patch)
- Early intervention teams sometimes offer help that's not wanted for those experiencing homelessness, FOX 31 reports. Journalists spent a morning with an outreach worker who explained why people often turn down aid and shelter. (FOX 31 Denver)
- United States health officials gave the final clearance Tuesday for COVID-19 vaccines for children ages 5 to 11, and some Colorado CVS pharmacies are already accepting appointments for the age group. (Denver Patch)
- The Denver Animal Shelter has received a surge of small animals — including rabbits, guinea pigs, mice and turtles — who are searching for their forever homes, the shelter said. (Denver Patch)

I've spent the past nine years working for various news outlets across North America, including Chicago Patch, Global News and WBEZ. I've covered high-profile court cases, civil rights abuses, mass shootings, natural disasters and major crimes — but also countless happy news stories about kindness, innovation and resilience. When I'm not writing articles, I can be found hiking, snowboarding, debating politics with my husband and attempting to be a sci-fi and astronomy geek.
