Inmate Dies In JeffCo Jail Cell: Sheriff's Office

Philip Thomas, 34, was found unresponsive on the floor of his cell early Friday morning, the sheriff's office said.

GOLDEN, CO – An inmate died early Friday morning in his cell at the Jefferson County jail, the JeffCo sheriff's office announced Friday.

Philip Thomas, 34, was found on the floor of his cell by a detention deputy making a routine check around 1 a.m. Thomas was unresponsive and emergency personnel administered "CPR and other lifesaving protocols," the sheriff's office said, but Thomas was declared dead at 1:50 a.m.

Thomas had been booked into the jail after being arrested Jan. 2 in Wheat Ridge on a warrant from Denver for a driving offense, the sheriff's office said.

"The death does not appear to be suspicious and is currently under investigation," the sheriff's office said in a statement. The District Attorney’s Office will assist with the investigation.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death, the sheriff's office said.
