What Should Go In Golden Time Capsule?

The city will open a 50-year time capsule buried in 1968 and replace it with one to be opened by "the people of 2068."

GOLDEN, CO – The City of Golden asks, what do you want your great-grandchildren to know about 2018?

On Nov. 11, the contents of a time capsule buried in front of City Hall in 1968 on the 50-year anniversary of the Amistice that ended WWI will be revealed. It will be replaced with a new time capsule for the people of 2068.

The Golden History Museum is gathering objects to include in the capsule that reflect our times and needs your ideas. Individuals are invited online to suggest items for the museum to acquire for the capsule.

The capsule was buried 100 years ago to commemorate what we now call "Armistice Day" in 1918 – the end of World War I.

"When Armistice was announced on November 11, 1918, the citizens of Golden celebrated the end of the Great War with parades, parties, and revelry. Hundreds of gleeful Goldenites gathered at the Loveland Firehouse to peal the firehouse bell," a history from the Golden Museum says. "The bell rang for five consecutive hours -- so much that the friction of the striking clapper caused the bell to overheat and crack. Jubilant citizens dubbed it Golden’s 'Liberty Bell.'"

The bell was dedicated as a memorial and a time capsule was buried at its base with instructions to dig it up on November 11, 1968. Golden's citizens unearthed the time capsule fifty years later, then buried a new time capsule to be opened on November 11, 2018.

On Sunday, Nov. 11, 2018, (now celebrated as Veteran's Day) the Golden History Museum & Park and the City of Golden will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the end of WWI with free admission. The 1968 time capsule will be unearthed and its contents revealed at the Golden History Museum. And, following tradition, the museum will dedicate a new time capsule to be opened in 2068.

Suggestions so far include mementos commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Golden Lions Club, a bottle of micro-brew beer and photos and items from popular culture (such as McDonalds Happy Meal packages). A history of Rocky Flats and its conversion from nuclear weapons trigger factory to 2018 nature preserve was suggested.

What would YOU place in the Time Capsule? The deadline is Nov. 1. Enter your ideas here.
