Proposed railroad merger could eventually increase local train traffic (gjsentinel.com) — A proposed Union Pacific–Norfolk Southern merger could modestly increase daily train traffic through Grand Junction over the coming years, even though freight tonnage here would barely change. Supporters tout better service and fewer trucks on I‑70, while critics warn the huge railroad could reduce competition and raise costs for consumers nationwide.

Two Arrested After Back-to-Back Burglaries at Tractor Supply (junctionnow.com) — Grand Junction police arrested two suspects after back-to-back overnight burglaries at the Tractor Supply store on Highway 6 & 50 on December 25 and 26. Officers say stolen merchandise was taken in both incidents, the suspects were caught after briefly fleeing on foot, and the burglaries appear isolated with no ongoing threat to the community.
   

4. Colorado State Patrol warns against DUIs— especially in rural Colorado (nbc11news.com) — Grand Junction residents are being urged to line up a sober ride before New Year’s Eve, as Colorado State Patrol warns of steep DUI costs and extra enforcement on local roads. With limited rideshares in Mesa County, Sunshine Taxi and a new Everyday Taxi service will be operating in Grand Junction and nearby communities to help people get home safely.
   

5. New Evidence Casts Doubt on Conviction in Deadly 1991 Grand Junction Bombings (power1029noco.com) — Grand Junction’s long-remembered 1991 pipe bombings are back in the spotlight as new evidence has led to a retrial for convicted bomber James Genrich, who has always maintained his innocence. Legal advocates now argue key forensic evidence used in the original Grand Junction case was seriously flawed, raising questions about whether the right person has been imprisoned for more than three decades.
