Attempted Murder Of Mom, 70: Lakewood Son Pleads Guilty

James Andrew Navarro was accused in February of punching his elderly mother after an argument and knocking out two of her teeth.

LAKEWOOD, CO – A Lakewood son, 37, filed a guilty plea last week in connection with an alleged February attack that left his 70-year-old mother injured and knocked out two of her teeth.

James Andrew Navarro appeared in Jefferson County District Court on Oct. 25, where he pled guilty to attempted second-degree murder, the First Judicial District Attorney's Office said Monday.

Police were dispatched to the 1300 block of Zephyr Street around midnight on Feb. 27, where they found the injured mother who said her son James had followed her out of the house after an argument, then grabbed her, threw her to the ground and repeatedly punched her in the face, an arrest affidavit said. A passing stranger stopped the attack and allowed the woman to call 911 from his cell phone, police reports said. Navarro fled on a bicycle.

The elderly mother told police she had been strangled and that two of her teeth were knocked out. She was taken to a hospital where she was treated for a fractured orbital bone and a fractured elbow, the affidavit said.

Shortly thereafter, police said Navarro allegedly threatened a 61-year-old man in a wheelchair who was waiting for a bus on West Colfax Avenue near the Home Depot. The man told police Navarro allegedly threw a shopping cart at him, then held a knife near his face and punched him repeatedly, the arrest affidavit said. A passing witness stopped her car and asked the victim if he was all right, and Navarro fled. He was taken into custody by police nearby soon after.
