Colorado Family Accidentally Eats Cereal With 1997 Expiration

The good news is the family is still alive.

LAKEWOOD, CO -- A Colorado family thought they were having a healthy, granola breakfast until they looked at the box it came from. The Quaker 100% Natural Granola was expired.

But, it didn't just expire a few days ago or a few months ago. Rather, the expiration date was from 21 years ago.

ABC 7 in Denver reported the Carelse family purchased the box of granola from a local Walmart store on Monday. They took a few bites from the granola only to learn it was stale.

Turns out the expiration date was Feb. 22, 1997, the news station reported.

"I was not born yet," daughter Layla told ABC 7. "I'm only 11."

Mother, Anthea, said she had a few bites before stopping. Father, Josiah, took it upon himself to eat an entire bowl, the news station reported.

“I just started eating and thinking, 'It just tastes funny. It must be OK,'” Josiah told the news station.

ABC 7 reached out to Walmart for comment but the store has not yet responded.
