Free Urban Wildlife Symposium Comes To Lakewood Cultural Center

"Our Neighbors are Wild!" a JeffCo Open Space urban wildlife symposium, will cover coyotes, snakes, raptors and invasive species.

LAKEWOOD, CO – Calling all urban wildlife! A special presentation offered as part of the Jeffco Land Stewardship Series will take place in Lakewood Nov. 17.

"Our Neighbors are Wild!" an urban wildlife symposium is co-sponsored by the Jefferson County Invasive Species Management and JeffCo Open Space.

The three-hour event from 9 a.m. - noon at Lakewood Cultural Center will focus on the interaction between wildlife and humans in shared living areas. The program is open to ages 16 to adult.

JeffCo Open Space manages parkland close to suburban Denver's urban expansion, and users of the space's 54,000 acres of preserved land, 28 parks and 252 miles of trails sometimes interact with the wild animals who live there.

The topics that will be covered include:

Coyote Country All Front Range communities are home to coyotes. These clever canids have readily adapted to our food and habitat-rich environments.

Snakes - What's the Buzz? JeffCo Open Space monitored the movements of 20 Prairie Rattlesnakes on North Table Mountain with radio trackers last year.

Raptors - Volunteers help JeffCo Open Space monitor nest boxes and natural nests of eagles, Red-tailed hawks, prairie falcons, Peregrine falcons and Great Horned Owls.

Rabies in Wildlife - JeffCo Open Space works with the Jefferson County Health Department to track instances of rabies in skunks, bats and other animals and minimize the danger to pets and humans.

Invasive Species - Bullfrogs and Red-earred Sliders Invasive bullfrogs (Lithobates catesbeianus) are voracious predators that prey upon numerous native species of amphibians, reptiles, fish and other species.
