Man Killed After Shootout With Lakewood Police
A man seen firing a handgun in a Lakewood park ended up in a gun fight with Lakewood police, and was shot and killed.

LAKEWOOD, CO – A man is dead after a gun battle with Lakewood police officers, the Lakewood Police Department said.
Around 7:20 p.m., an officer on patrol heard gunshots and saw a man firing a handgun in Mountair Park at 13th Avenue and DePew Street, said John Romero, Lakewood Police spokesman.
The officer confronted the man, who did not respond to demands to drop his weapon, Romero said. The officer called for backup and the man fled, pursued by officers. In an alley near 13th Avenue and Ames Street, the man fired at officers again, Romero said.

Officers returned fire, and the man was hit and died of his wounds, Romero said. A handgun was recovered at the scene, he said.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Critical Incident Response Team will be investigating the incident, Romero said. He did not name the man killed.

No officers were injured, Romero said. The incident is still under investigation.
