Lakewood Son Gets 14 Years For Assault Of Elderly Mom

James Navarro pleaded guilty to attempted 2nd degree murder for a February attack that injured his mother, 70, and knocked out her teeth.

GOLDEN, CO – A Lakewood son, 38, was sentenced to prison for a February attack that left his 70-year-old mother injured and knocked out two of her teeth.

James Andrew Navarro was sentenced in Jefferson District Court Dec. 11 to 14 years in prison for the attack on his mother, the First Judicial District Attorney's Office said Wednesday. On Oct. 25, he pled guilty to attempted second-degree murder.

The attack happened in Lakewood in the 1300 block of Zephyr Street around midnight on Feb. 27, an arrest affidavit said. Police responding to a 911 call found the injured mother who said her son James had followed her out of the house after an argument, then grabbed her, threw her to the ground and repeatedly punched her in the face. A passing stranger stopped the attack and allowed the woman to call 911 from his cell phone, police reports said. Navarro fled on a bicycle.

The elderly mother told police she had been strangled and that two of her teeth were knocked out. She was taken to a hospital where she was treated for a fractured orbital bone and a fractured elbow, the affidavit said.

Shortly thereafter, police said Navarro stopped his bike and allegedly threatened a 61-year-old man in a wheelchair who was waiting for a bus on West Colfax Avenue near the Home Depot. The man told police Navarro allegedly threw a shopping cart at him, then held a knife near his face and punched him repeatedly, the arrest affidavit said. A passing witness stopped her car and asked the victim if he was all right, and Navarro fled. He was taken into custody by police nearby soon afterwards.
