Speed Likely Played Role In Fatal Crash: Lakewood Police

A man was killed and a 19-year-old female driver was seriously injured near West Jewell Avenue and Illiff Drive, police said.

LAKEWOOD, CO – A man died and a woman was seriously injured in an auto wreck in Lakewood Tuesday night, police said.

About 8:40 p.m., police were called to the intersection of West Jewell Avenue and Illiff Drive to investigate a serious motor accident.

Witnesses told police a grey Mercedes sedan with male driver, traveling at a high rate of speed, struck a black Mitsubishi Lancer driven by an 19 year-old female. The male driver of the Mercedes was pronounced dead on arrival. The female driver of the Mitsubushi was taken to a local hospital with serious bodily injuries, police said in a statement.

Police believe speed was a major factor in this accident, they said in a statement. Drugs and/or alcohol were not thought to have played a factor. Police did not release the name of either driver.

No charges have been filed, police said.
