Forecasters Put East Coast 'On Alert' For Potential Storm: See CT Details

Meteorologists said they are putting the East Coast "on alert" for a major storm. Here is a look at the Connecticut impacts.

CONNECTICUT — After a bout of wet weather on Wednesday in Connecticut, meteorologists are warning of an incoming storm which could bring flooding rain and strong winds to the East Coast.

AccuWeather meteorologists said they are putting the East Coast "on alert," for the potential of stormy weather for the weekend and early next week.

"The tropical wind and rainstorm is expected to form over the Gulf Stream off the Southeast coast Friday or over the weekend. This additional heat and energy from the warm ocean current can allow the rainstorm to strengthen further," AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva said.

The storm is forecast to move northward into early next week, once again raising concerns of rough surf and strong rip currents along the East coast, according to Accuweather. It reports beaches in southern New England could be impacted.

Forecasters are monitoring the timing and track of the storm, and local impacts will become clearer later in the week.

A "strong and slow-moving high pressure" in the North Atlantic could steer the rainstorm close to the mid-Atlantic, according to Accuweather. "This scenario could bring heavy, tropical rain as far west as the Virginia and Pennsylvania Appalachians and even into southern New England by Sunday afternoon," AccuWeather said.

“Alternatively, a scenario with faster-moving high pressure would allow the rainstorm room to travel farther east, away from the coastline, lessening the expected rain impacts,” according to AccuWeather.

Connecticut impacts explored

WFSB meteorologists are also tracking the potential for stormy weather on Sunday and into early next week due to the system.

WFSB reports Sunday could be “unsettled” in Connecticut.

“We’ll be tracking a coastal storm from the south and high pressure from the north,” WFSB reports. “Depending on which one wins out, we could see a wetter/breezier day, or a sunny day. Stay tuned as this is an evolving situation.”

In the short term, WFSB reports Tuesday will be sunny to start, with partly cloudy skies this afternoon and a breezy day due to an approaching cold front.

Rain arrives early Wednesday

“Rain is knocking on our door and we’re going to open that door wide because we do need that rain!” WFSB reports.

WFSB predicts rain will start after midnight tonight and will impact the morning commute Wednesday before ending in the early afternoon.

Both the National Weather Service and WFSB are forecasting the potential for thunderstorms tonight and into tomorrow.

“While we’re not anticipating severe weather, isolated rumbles of thunder cannot be ruled out,” WFSB reports.

The National Weather Service predicts between a half inch and an inch of rain could fall in Connecticut before the precipitation ends on Wednesday.

Thursday and Friday are expected to be sunny and much cooler, with highs in the low 60s in the daytime, and a chance for frost inland, according to WFSB and the National Weather Service.

WFSB anticipates Saturday will be dry, with seasonable temperatures, and good for outdoor activities such as the Hartford Marathon.
