From shucking oysters by the Sound to tapping real ales in West Hartford, there's no shortage of ways to savor the season this weekend in CT

CONNECTICUT — The first weekend of September is bursting with flavor, fun, and fairground traditions in Connecticut. From shucking oysters by the Sound to tapping real ales in West Hartford, there’s no shortage of ways to savor the season. Whether you’re looking for classic agricultural fairs, nautical history, or neighborhood porch jams, Sept. 4–7 has something for everyone.

A late-summer tradition, the 47th Annual Norwalk Oyster Festival (Sept. 5–7) takes over Veterans Memorial Park with food, music, and—of course—oysters in every form. More than just seafood, the fest features live entertainment across multiple stages, arts and crafts vendors, carnival rides, and the always-popular lumberjack shows. Proceeds benefit the Seaport Association, making it a feast with a purpose.

Connecticut’s country fair season hits its stride this weekend with three big ones:

  • Hebron Harvest Fair (Sept. 4–7): Known for its giant midway and nightly concerts, Hebron also hosts tractor pulls, livestock shows, and a demolition derby that’s a crowd favorite.
  • North Haven Fair (Sept. 4–7): A mix of agriculture, entertainment, and local food, this fair is famous for its fried treats, live music, and family-friendly atmosphere.
  • Wapping Fair (Sept. 4–7): Held in South Windsor since 1892, Wapping delivers with horse pulls, local artisans, and a relaxed, small-town vibe.

Whichever one you choose, expect the smell of fried dough, the roar of tractor engines, and the sight of prize-winning pumpkins.

New London’s waterfront becomes a hub of history during the Connecticut Maritime Heritage Festival (Sept. 6–7). The weekend includes tall ships, Coast Guard demonstrations, boat tours, live music, and family activities along the Thames. Don’t miss the Parade of Sail, which fills the harbor with color and spectacle.

On Saturday, Sept. 6, porches and lawns in Guilford transform into mini stages for Porchfest, a grassroots music festival that brings together local performers and neighbors for a day of song and community. From folk and rock to jazz and indie, the tunes spill into the streets in this walkable celebration.

Beer lovers, rejoice. On Sept. 6, the grounds of the Noah Webster House in West Hartford host the Real Ale Harvest Festival, where cask-conditioned beers are tapped and poured the old-fashioned way. Dozens of regional breweries participate, and tickets include unlimited tastings. Expect hearty food, live music, and a cozy harvest atmosphere.

From oysters to oxen, porch music to tall ships, this first September weekend offers a perfect sampler of Connecticut culture. Whether you’re digging into seafood by the shore, raising a pint in West Hartford, or cheering on a tractor pull in Hebron, there’s no better way to celebrate the long days of late summer.
