Avon Activates Severe Cold Weather Protocols

The town is opening warming centers for the first major cold snap of the season.

AVON, CT — The first major cold snap of the season is expected to hit tonight, with the Town of Avon announcing the implementation of cold weather protocols.

Extreme cold weather, with temperatures averaging 10 to 20 degrees below normal with wind chills close to zero at times, is forecasted beginning Thursday, Dec. 4, through Tuesday, Dec. 9.

As a result, the Avon Senior Center and the Avon Free Public Library will be open during normal business hours and will serve as warming centers.

The locations and hours are listed below.

• Avon Senior Center; 635 West Avon Road; (860) 675-4355; Hours: Friday, Monday, and Tuesday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• Avon Free Public Library; 281 Country Club Road; (860) 673-9712; Hours: Today (12/4) until 8:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and Monday and Tuesday 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

"If residents are in need of protection from the extreme cold when warming centers are not available, please call Non-Emergency Dispatch at (860) 409-4200, and the town will make arrangements to provide you with access to a warming facility," wrote the Town of Avon.
