Avon Celebrates America's 250, What You Need To Know
Avon's America 250 Committee recently released an updated list of ongoing and future programs celebrating the nation's birthday next year.

AVON, CT — The local committee organizing multiple celebrations and events in Avon to commemorate the 250th birthday of the U.S. next year has sent out an update on its progress.
Avon's America 250 Committee has already named a winner of its official logo contest in the form of Avon resident Shane Leighton.
"Shane’s dynamic and thoughtful design was selected to represent Avon throughout this historic
year, marking the 250th anniversary of American independence," wrote the committee in a recent announcement.

He received a gift certificate on July 3 donated by the Avon Old Farms Hotel, and his logo will be featured at events and on materials throughout the celebration, the committee said.

• The formal launch of Avon’s America 250 celebration will take place on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1, beginning at 1 p.m.
The entire community is invited to join an afternoon of patriotic festivities, including: Live performances and ceremonial proclamations; Colonial games for all ages; Community gathering and ice cream from Dom’s Creamery.
The committee has not announced a location for the event yet.
In the lead-up to the Labor Day event, and continuing into the fall, the committee invites folks to visit the Avon Free Public Library, the Avon Historical Society, and the Avon Senior Center, including:
At the Avon Free Public Library:
• July 1–31: The American Revolution: Artifacts & Stories from Across Connecticut –
Exhibit in the Library Art Gallery.
• Through Aug. 31: We Are the Sons of Freedom – Special exhibit in the Library’s
Marian Hunter History Room, exploring Avon’s involvement in the earth-shaking events
of 1775.
• Thursday Evenings in July: The American Revolution is Coming! – Three-part lecture
series with Dr. Matthew Warshauer (CCSU).
• Tuesday, August 12 at 2 p.m.: "War at Home: The Battle of Ridgefield" – In-person
lecture by educators from the Keeler Tavern Museum & History Center

Avon Senior Center
• Sunday, Sept. 14 at 2 p.m.: "What a Glorious CRASH They Made: Musick of
Connecticut's Revolution.:
This is a stirring concert performance by Richard Franklin Donohue, presented by the Avon Historical Society and the Avon Senior Center, to be held at the Avon Senior Center
"We encourage all residents to take part in these rich and meaningful programs throughout the
summer and early fall — and we look forward to seeing you at the Labor Day celebration and
beyond," wrote the committee.
