Avon Encouraging Neighborhood Block Parties
The town's rec department is urging neighbors to get together this summer, offering party tips and a contest for the best block party.
AVON, CT — One of the rites of summer, at least back in the day, was the old "block party," where neighbors would close off a street and enjoy each other's company.
It was a place for families to get to know each other and for children to make new friends.
In today's busy world of neighbors not knowing each other, the Town of Avon wants to help reverse that trend.

That's why the Avon Recreation and Parks Department is going out of its way to encourage block parties in town, going so far as to have a contest for the winning party host.
From now through September, neighbors are encouraged to pitch in and celebrate the summer together ... with a little help from the town.

"There’s no better way to build community than with a good old-fashioned block party—and we want to help you throw one," wrote the Town of Avon recently.
From now through September, Avon residents who host a block party and send the rec department a photo will be entered to win a $50 Avon Rec gift certificate.
The town has tips for folks looking to have a block party, all available via a QR code on a department flyer.
Avon also has a block party request form in the rec department office, where they can get permission to close off a street to traffic if applicable.
