Avon Garden Club To Look At CT's Forests

The Garden Club of Avon, next week, is hosting a special program on the future of the state's lush forest land. Reservations are due Jan. 7.

AVON, CT — Lush green forests are probably an afterthought in the dead of winter, but a special program in Avon next week will examine this beloved environmental feature locally.

The Garden Club of Avon is hosting "Connecticut's Changing Forests," with forestry expert Dr. Elisabeth Ward, on Monday, Jan. 12, at the Church of St. Ann's Father Bennet Hall, 289 Arch Road, Avon.

The program starts at 11:30 a.m. with a member meeting and a bag lunch.

Ward, a scientist with the CT Agricultural Experiment Station, will discuss ways the state can strengthen its forests' health and resiliency.

"Connecticut's forests are changing in response to both natural forest development and emerging stressors, including insect pests, pathogens, and invasive plant species," wrote the garden club.

Ward, the club said, will help attendees better understand the "complex forces" impacting the state's forests.

Reservations are required for the program, with a guest fee of $10 payable at the door (cash or check payable to "Garden Club of Avon").

Folks are asked to reserve their spot by Wednesday, Jan. 7.
