Avon Resident Appointed to Lead the Hartford County Medical Assn.

In marking a milestone in a distinguished career of service to the local medical community, Atique A. Mirza, MD, FACC, has been elected the new President of the Board of Directors of Hartford County Medical Association (HCMA). Dr. Mirza, a cardiologist, is set to lead the association into a new era of healthcare excellence and physician engagement in 2025 and 2026.

He will be inaugurated into his position on September 25, 2024 at the HCMA Annual Meeting at Farmington Gardens, Farmington, CT. Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz, Senator Saud Anwar, MD, and Senator Jeff Gordon, MD, will be among the dignitaries attending the meeting.

Atique Mirza, MD is a partner of Central Connecticut Cardiologists, LLC with offices in Hartford, Enfield and Simsbury. He has been a consultant cardiologist at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford, CT since 2006. He is a resident of Avon.

Atique Mirza is an outstanding cardiac physician and is well positioned to lead the HCMA as its next president,” stated Frank Santoro, MD, 2022-2024 president of HCMA and a dermatologist at Hartford HealthCare. “Over the past several years, Dr. Mirza has shown his commitment to our physician community and I am proud to have him as a colleague,” Santoro added

With a medical degree from Allama Iqbal Medical College, Dr. Mirza has been in practice for more than 20 years. He has expertise in treating heart failure, coronary artery disease, and chronic high blood pressure. Dr. Mirza brings a wealth of knowledge and a private practice perspective to the presidency. Under his leadership, the HCMA aims to address key challenges facing local physicians and promote collaborative efforts among healthcare providers.

"As HCMA president, I am honored to accept this role and excited about the opportunities that lie ahead," Dr. Mirza said in a statement. "My focus will be on strengthening our community partnerships, advocating for our members' needs, and continuing to drive improvements in patient care. Together, we can work towards a more integrated and effective healthcare system, Mirza added."

As president, Dr. Mirza’s plans to focus on several key priorities: strengthening the physician community, enhancing professional development opportunities for HCMA members, and expanding public health outreach programs. His leadership will be instrumental in navigating the evolving landscape of healthcare, particularly in addressing issues such as access to care and health equity.

Representing over 1,000 physicians in 2024, HCMA was founded in 1792, and has a long-standing tradition of supporting medical professionals and improving healthcare in Hartford County. The association provides a platform for physicians to collaborate, share knowledge, and advocate for the medical community’s interests. Dr. Mirza's appointment marks a new chapter in the association's history, promising a dynamic and forward-thinking approach to addressing both current and future healthcare challenges.
