AVON, CT — Local police swarmed a couple of schools in Avon recently, but there was no reason for alarm.

They were there to educate and have fun themselves.

As part of National Read Across America Week earlier this month, representatives of the Avon Police Department fanned out to the town's schools and cracked open books with local youngsters.

Showing police are about much, much more than just catching the bad guys, Avon's finest got to spend their time reading to children.

Pine Grove School pupils got a visit from Avon Police Chief Paul Melanson, Det. Jason Reid and Chief's Assistant Nicole Martinez.

Meanwhile Churchery Preschool had a visit from officers John DeMarco and Officer Karolina Staszewski.

The week went so well, that Avon police vowed to be back reading again a year from now.
