Town of Avon

AVON, CT — With the town currently experiencing daytime road closings and detours associated with a mass road reconstruction project, local officials this week released an update on the project's status.

The Town of Avon Engineering Department issued a statement Tuesday on the ongoing Old Farms Road Project.

Voters on Dec. 14, 2022, approved a $5.5 million appropriation for the first phase of the Old Farms Road reconfiguration project.

This will widen and shift portions of the heavily traveled roadway and, presumably, improve safety and cut down on accidents.

Work on that phase has already begun and it is hoped to be done by December 2025.

As for where things stand now, the local engineering department briefed residents on the latest project developments. They included:

• On Monday, June 10, the town had a public information meeting regarding Phase II of the East/West Section of the Old Farms Road Project.

The ongoing project is only Phase I of a much larger roadway reconstruction, with town/state officials also planning a second phase.

Phase II — also dubbed the "East/West Section" — is in the planning stages and would require an additional, voter-approved appropriation.

The second phase of this project involves additional Old Farms Road re-alignments and replacing two bridges to widen lanes and improve safety. No price tag has been finalized for Phase II.

• The brief road closure on Old Farms Road last Thursday, June 13, and Friday, June 14, provided workers the opportunity to complete the job of tying the new roadway into the existing one at the north end of the project, including the base course pavement.

They were also able to pave the base course on a large section of the northern leg of the project during the period, Avon officials said.

• Starting this week, as previously noticed, the section of Scoville Road between its intersection with Old Farms Road and just west of the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail is closed to traffic.

This is so the contractor, Spazzarini Construction of Enfield, works to reconstruct that portion of Scoville and construct the roundabout.

This closure is scheduled to last until Aug. 9. Trail users are asked to use caution as they approach and cross Scoville Road.

• Spazzarini is also preparing for the installation of the new box culvert that will cross under Old Farms Road at the southern end of the project.

This section of the roadway is scheduled to be closed to traffic beginning Aug. 12 and last until Oct. 11.

More information will be posted on this closure as we approach those dates.
