Hartford HealthCare "launches" new space for industry innovation
World leaders in innovation met at Hartford HealthCare's new space to discuss health care

Hartford HealthCare launched “Launch” yesterday. CEO Jeff Flaks hosted a panel discussion to kick off the new innovator space, where topics regarding health care were discussed.
The panelists were Annie Lamont, founder of Oak HC/FT, Dame Fiona Murray, associate dean of Innovation & Inclusion at MIT School of Management and Dimitris Bertsimas, MIT associate dean for the Master of Business Analytics.
“Health care needs to be more accessible, more affordable, higher levels of quality … Health care has to change, we can’t afford it,” Flaks said, starting off the conversation.

Seated inside “Launch,” a dedicated space for fostering creativity and innovation, about 100 people gathered to hear an insightful discussion about the current problems facing health care and the future of the industry.
“We think of innovation as taking the idea from inception all the way through impact,” Murray said. “I think what we have to recognize is that you need the confidence to have those ideas at the very earlier stages and to be smart and open to ask the right questions, but you absolutely have to then have that flexibility to experiment to try things.”

The panelists delved into topics about health care in Connecticut ranging from affordability to how to build the future of the industry.
“It’s about training and education … making places like this more liveable…We have to reconceptualize what education looks like,” Murray said.
Bertsimas explained how growth in health care means using artificial intelligence. He explained why health care has not experienced the level of growth other industries have seen.
“In my experience the biggest impediment for adapting to these new technologies is culture,” Bertsimas said.
Lamont shared how she loves working with Hartford HealthCare because it looks toward the future of health care.
“It is a model system. And as you're thinking about developing your system, it's something that approximates where the world is going which isn't really true with so many other Invasion Hospital Systems,” Lamont said.
Flaks took a moment to appreciate all the innovative work Hartford HealthCare colleagues have done and will do.
“We achieve great things because we have great people,” Flaks said.
