How Safe Is Your Child's Avon Bus Stop Walk?

After bus stop consolidations at the beginning of the year, Foxcroft Run parents who complained weren't satisfied with the district's compliance Wednesday to reinstate their original stop at the Burnham Road intersection because it would mean Burnham Hollow Road children would lose theirs. 

The parents pushed for both stops to remain as they have been in past years, but they said they weren't getting the response they wanted from district officials and bus company DATTCO.

Hours after Patch and television news stations WFSB and FoxCT walked with Foxcroft Run children and parents to their bus stop on Thursday, the parents received word that the district would restore the two stops and split them on two different bus routes. 

School officials had told the parents that there wasn't enough distance between the two streets for the bus to flash its safety lights for other motor vehicles to see. The district has received nearly 100 requests for bus stop changes and more than 20 of them have been honored. 

Patch could not reach John Spang, Avon Public Schools assistant superintendent for finance and operations, for comment Thursday.
