Massive Avon Road Project Nets Large State Grant

AVON/HARTFORD, CT — The Town of Avon is benefitting from part of a $12 million funding package announced by state officials Tuesday for transportation safety/accessibility improvements.

Gov. Ned Lamont and Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto Tuesday announced the state Department of Transportation is awarding more than $12 million to 17 towns and cities throughout Connecticut for projects that will improve transportation accessibility and safety.

Avon is slated to receive $792,598 for the Old Farms Road project's second phase, which aims to improve the roadway and enhance safety and accessibility.

State Sen. Lisa Seminara, R-Avon, applauded the state funding for Old Farms Road.

“Some welcome news for Avon,” Seminara said. “These funds will make Old Farms Road safer for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists alike. I appreciate the governor’s and the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s attention to this important Avon infrastructure initiative.”

The grants are being awarded through the DOT’s Community Connectivity Grant Program.

Now in its sixth round of awards, this state-funded program provides financial support for local infrastructure initiatives that make conditions safer, more accommodating, and equitable for pedestrians and bicyclists in urban, suburban, and rural centers.

“Our main streets and community centers serve as vital social, economic, and transportation hubs,” Lamont said. “Improving local infrastructure for all users in community centers is a win for our whole state and opens the door to further economic growth.”

“From sidewalks and multi-use trails to ADA-compliant ramps, these 17 projects focus on providing safety enhancements and mobility options to schools, jobs, public transit, and local economic centers,” Eucalitto said.
