Retired Avon Fire Official Mourned, Also Served On East Windsor Boards

The longtime firefighter served in Avon from 1965 until 1988 and, after moving to East Windsor, served on town boards from 1997 to 2020.

AVON, CT/EAST WINDSOR, CT — The Avon Volunteer Fire Department and the local community are mourning the loss of its former longtime fire chief, who died recently at the age of 82.

The AVFD said Monday that retired veteran firefighter David Tyler died in Springfield, Tenn., on Aug. 20.

Tyler was a member of the AVFD for 26 years and served as fire chief from 1987-88. After moving to East Windsor in 1990, he served on multiple boards in commissions in that town as well.

"Chief Tyler faithfully served the Avon Volunteer Fire Department with honor, dedication, and courage for 26 years," wrote the AVFD on Monday.

"We extend our heartfelt condolences to Chief Tyler’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of serving alongside him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his service and sacrifice."

A native of Plainville, Tyler moved to Avon after marrying his longtime wife of 60 years, Beverly Morrell, who survives him.

Tyler worked in construction and, eventually, owned his own construction company.

He became a firefighter with the AVFD in 1965 and served until his retirement as chief in 1988.

Tyler and his family moved to East Windsor in 1990 and served in various offices in town, including the water pollution control authority, planning and zoning commission, and board of finance.

He and his wife moved to Tennessee in 2021 after retiring. Tyler is survived by two daughters and their respective families.
