Section Of Avon Roadway Closed For Refurb To Reopen

The recently completed project is part of a massive, multi-year initiative to reconfigure, widen and improve safety of the road.

AVON, CT — A small portion of a massive road renovation initiative is complete with the road reopening Friday, Oct. 18, according to Avon officials.

The new sections of Old Farms Road (from the intersection of Thompson Road heading north) will be open today at about 2 p.m., officials said Thursday.

"The public is reminded to exercise caution when traveling along Old Farms Road while drivers adjust to the new traffic patterns," wrote the town.

That stretch of state highway is in the midst of a massive project to reconfigure the roadway, a project expected to take years.

Voters on Dec. 14, 2022, approved a $5.5 million appropriation for the first phase of the Old Farms Road reconfiguration project.

This will widen and shift portions of the heavily traveled roadway and, presumably, improve safety and cut down on accidents.

Work on that phase has already begun and it is hoped to be done by December 2025.

The ongoing project is only Phase I of a much larger roadway reconstruction, with town/state officials also planning a second phase.

Phase II — also dubbed the "East/West Section" — is in the planning stages and would require an additional, voter-approved appropriation.

The second phase of this project involves additional Old Farms Road re-alignments and replacing two bridges to widen lanes and improve safety. No price tag has been finalized for Phase II.
