War Declared On Invasive Plants In Avon

The Garden Club of Avon Monday, Oct. 7, is hosting a forum on how the community can work together to re-introduce native plants in town.

AVON, CT — The Garden Club of Avon has declared war on invasive plant species and on Monday, Oct. 7, it is hosting a forum on what can be done about it.

The club's program, called "Growing a Greener Avon Together," will take place that evening at 7 p.m. in the Avon Free Public Library's community room, 281 Country Club Road, with all welcome.

Monday's forum will be a call to arms on how folks can stop invasive plants and re-plant native ones, especially in Avon's public areas.

"Join us as we connect with groups and individuals working to replace invasive plants with native species in Avon's open spaces and home gardens," wrote the club. "Discover the impact of their efforts and learn how you can contribute.

The club will also be recruiting helpers to remove and replace invasive plants with native species; maintain newly planted flora and fauna; and spread the word in the community about the effort.

Club officials said one needn't be a prolific gardener to participate (flesh-colored thumbs are OK).

"Whether you're a seasoned gardener or a beginner, there are ways for everyone to make a meaningful contribution," wrote the Garden Club of Avon.
