Berlin Couple Wins Massive Lotto Payout After Buying Ticket In South Windsor

The winning scratch-off game was purchased after the husband won a little bit of cash playing Powerball.

BERLIN/SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — A Berlin couple's lottery windfall amid the ongoing Powerball hype shows that life-altering payouts are possible with even scratch-off games.

The Connecticut Lottery Corp. said Wednesday the couple won $500,000 on Tuesday, Sept. 2, playing the $4,000,000 Fortune scratch-off game.

The winning ticket was purchased at the South Windsor Pride convenience store on John Fitch Boulevard, according to lotto officials.

When the winning couple saw the results, they were dumbfounded.

"They say they didn’t believe it and brought the ticket to the CT Lottery Claims Center in Wallingford to verify it," wrote the Connecticut Lottery Corp. in a release. "After the claims staff confirmed the win, the couple was thrilled and thankful while still in a state of disbelief."

Of course, the $500,000 win, according to the Connecticut Lottery Corp., was indirectly fueled by the Powerball craze, which has a jackpot of $1.7 billion.

As the Berlin husband explains it, a small win in Powerball led to a big win playing the $50 scratch-off game.

“I was originally buying some Powerball tickets with buddies, won a few bucks, and then bought some scratch games,” said the husband in a Connecticut Lottery Corp. release. “After we won, I called my wife and we both raced over to the CLC claims center to verify the ticket.”

For selling the winning ticket, Pride will receive a $5,000 bonus.
