Which Berlin Stores Sold Smokes To Underaged Customers? Berlin PD Has The Answer

The Berlin Police Department April 3 conducted a tobacco/vape enforcement operation against 21 local stores, with four cited.

BERLIN, CT — Local police earlier this month cited four Berlin tobacco/vape sellers for illegally selling to those under 21.

According to the Berlin Police Department Friday, April 11, the BPD worked in tandem with the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services to conduct a sting operation targeting 21 local retail establishments.

The April 3 operation, according to police, investigated any business that sells tobacco products and electronic cigarettes to determine if they were selling to those under 21.

Of the 21 establishments visited, 17 complied with state law.

But, police said, four did not. They were:

• Friendly Mart, 164 New Britain Road.

• Mobil Mart, 21 Chamberlain Highway

• Gulf/Sam's Food Store, 301 Berlin Turnpike

• Citgo/Atlantis Fresh Market, 109 Berlin Turnpike

Police said the offending clerks at the store were fined a combined $300, all first-time infractions.

"Retailers are required by state law to inspect the photo ID of anyone who appears under the age of 30 before selling a tobacco product or electronic cigarette," wrote the BPD in a statement Friday.
