Branford Firefighters Douse Chicken Coop Fire On Cut In Two Island, Part of Thimble Island Archipelago

Just after 10:30 a.m. Monday, 911 calls reported shed or outbuilding fire on the island, later confirmed to be a coop, spreading to brush.

BRANFORD, CT — Around 10:30 a.m., Monday, Branford public safety dispatch received several 911 calls "reporting a shed or outbuilding fire on Cut In Two Island, located within the Thimble Island archipelago," the Branford Fire Department noted in a news release.

The fire department noted that a "follow-up call clarified that the fire involved a chicken coop that had begun spreading to nearby brush."

At the time of dispatch, firefighters were "managing multiple simultaneous incidents, including providing mutual aid to East Haven, responding to wires down, and handling several medical emergencies."

"Despite these demands, remaining units immediately responded by deploying both department fire boats—one stationed on the Branford River and the other at the Town Dock in Stony Creek," fire officials said.

The Stony Creek fire boat arrived first on scene, officials said, adding the craft deployed a single hose line, and successfully extinguished the fire."

The fire was contained without further property damage and no injuries were reported, officials said.

"All eight chickens housed in the coop were accounted for and unharmed," it was noted. The Branford Fire Department is working in coordination with the Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter and the property owner to temporarily relocate the animals while plans are made to construct a new shelter, the fire department said.

According to the news release, a mutual aid fire boat from the Guilford Fire Department requested but was canceled prior to arrival. The East Haven Fire Department provided station coverage during the incident.

"The Branford Fire Department extends its sincere thanks to both departments for their assistance and cooperation," it was noted.
