Condolences to family of George W. Mellor Jr, 96, Patrick Biondello Sr, 78, Blake Lyon Lehr, 92, Alice Reutenauer, 96, Rafael Batista, 90.

BRANFORD, CT — Recent obituaries from the Branford area.

George W. Mellor Jr., 96, passed away April 21. A US Marine who fought in Korea, he had a long, successful career at the U.S. Post Office in Wallingford. Others knew him from his amazing array of interests and work. He was an entrepreneur at heart and in practice. Antique dealer and shop owner, Christmas tree farmer, delivery service, hauler, and furniture refinisher and restorer. In reality, George worked for and at anything he could to ensure that his family would prosper. He was a very strong, sensitive man who really listened, a man who truly enjoyed people, animals, nature, travel, good food, good wine, and single-malt Scotch. George loved life!

Patrick Biondello Sr., 78, passed away April 23. He enlisted in the Army and served two years and an active duty tour in Vietnam. Patrick was the recipient of two Purple Heart awards and the Congressional Medal of Honor for his service to the country. After retiring from the phone company in 1996 Patrick enjoyed spending time with his family. He was known for his sweet disposition and generosity. Patrick very sincerely cared about his family and always asked how you were doing first. He was proud of his service to the country, his career at the phone company and most importantly his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Blake Lyon Lehr, 92, passed away April 12. Blake worked 37 years at Western Electric before retiring to enjoy tennis, family, and time on the water. A devoted coach, he mentored youth in sports and supported his children and grandchildren. A Yankees fan and Branford Sports Hall of Fame inductee, he was active in church and a Mason for over 50 years. Known for his travels, kindness, and warm hugs, Blake will be remembered as a true gentleman.

Rafael "Ralph" Batista, 90, passed away April 17. Ralph was born in Juncos, Puerto Rico on June 14, 1934, the son of Rafael Batista Varona and Genara Algarin. He was the owner of Bell’s Italian and French Pastry Shoppe in Hamden for 15 years and prior to his retirement, a Pastry Chef at the El Conquistador Hotel in Puerto Rico. During his retirement he developed a passion for golf and was an avid golfer and a member of the Puerto Rico Senior Golf League. He was also an enthusiastic gardener and landscaper.

Alice M. Reutenauer, 96, passed away April 16. She worked at Blue Cross and was a retired officer at Branford Savings Bank where she worked for 25 years as an assistant treasurer and security officer. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Branford for over 65 years, a member of the Branford Women’s Club and a member of the Candlelight Club (friends who met monthly). She enjoyed cooking, gardening and traveling with her husband.
