Canton FD's Dynamic Duo Honored For Decades Of Service
One has served the Town of Canton Fire & EMS Department for 60 years, the other for a bit more than 50 years.

CANTON, CT — Since the mid-1970s, the Town of Canton Fire & EMS Department has had two men putting in the time and helping their community, saving lives and saving property.
And last week on April 26, both were honored with an unprecedented fire department award — they were named Canton Fire & EMS Department Life Members.
So, what does one have to do to earn that honor?
In the case of veteran firefighter Greg Sims, you only have to serve the local volunteer fire department for 60 years, bringing his tenure in Canton into the 1960s.
And for Willi Matava, you would have to serve more than 50 years.
Both men, along with several other local firefighting volunteers, were honored at the department's annual Town of Canton Fire & EMS Department Member Appreciation Dinner.
The dynamic duo was each presented with "life member" plaques in appreciation for their service. It is a new tradition that just started this year.
When describing the Matava and Sims, the department used terms like "remarkable" and "extraordinary."
"The lifelong dedication of Greg and Willi stands as a remarkable example of service, commitment, and leadership," wrote Canton fire officials.
"Their contributions have helped shape the very foundation of our department and community, and their legacy will continue to inspire generations to come."
In addition to Sims and Matava, Canton fire officials honored others for their service on a night aimed at "celebrating the exceptional individuals who go above and beyond to serve and protect our community."
The department also recognized the following for their milestone service achievements: Jeff Johnson – 25 Years; Leo LeBouf – 25 Years; Robert Weed – 15 Years; Manny Pantano – 10 Years; and Laura Farrell – five Years.
In addition, the department honored top responders for their "outstanding commitment." Fire Division: Tom Gotaski – 322 calls; Fire Police Division: John Malentacchi – 266 calls; and EMS Division: Alexa O’Connor – 393 EMS hours.
Meanwhile, two individuals received special recognition for their exceptional service: Department Service Award – Nick Graziano, and Chief’s Appreciation Award – Robert Weed
