Cheshire Fire Chief Jack Casner described the house as a “total loss” and said there was a collapse in the back of the home, according to WTNH News 8.

Cheshire Police Detectives and the Cheshire Fire Department Fire Marshall's Office, in cooperation with the Connecticut State Police Fire Marshall's Office, began an investigation into the cause and origin of the fire, according to Cheshire Police Lt. Jeffrey Sutherland.

Sutherland said investigators learned that an adult male resident reportedly escaped the burning structure and summoned help from a neighbor, and was later taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Investigators also learned that a second adult male resident and two dogs were unaccounted for (missing) and were suspected to have not escaped the fire, according to Sutherland.

“Due to heavy structural damage and a collapse to a portion of the residence as a result of the fire, the Town of Cheshire Department of Public Works was called upon to assist Investigators with sifting through the debris utilizing construction equipment,” Sutherland wrote in an update. “Ultimately, an unidentified human male and a canine were located deceased amongst the debris.

“The identity of the male will be withheld until the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is able to positively identify the person.”

The fire remains under investigation, Sutherland said.
