Cheshire Learner's Permit Station a Success

A pilot program in Cheshire allows teen drivers to make online appointments to get their learner's permit. After four months, the center at 1625 Highland Ave. has been deemed a success by the state Department of Motor Vehicles.

The Cheshire Technical Center also serves as the learner's permit test center. After four months of operation, about 3,000 new drivers have made appointments to get a learner's permit. They rate the service as 99 percent satisfactory, according to a statement from the DMV. 

 “This center continues to showcase how online appointments and a dedicated operation can improve customer service. This is a pilot project and shows we are taking the right approach for looking at new ways to serve the public," said DMV Commissioner Melody A. Currey.

The center is designed to improve efficiency and customer service while also providing an alternative to waiting in line at a DMV branch office, the statement noted.

Now 16- or 17-year-olds, or their parents, can schedule an appointment online at ct.gov/dmv to take the learner's permit test in Cheshire.

The new center also offers flexible hours to better meet family demands. Appointments may be made on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Fridays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
