Cheshire Teacher Removed After Video Ignites Firestorm On Social Media

Officials said the district has been "inundated with calls and emails" from people outside of Cheshire after the video hit social media.

CHESHIRE, CT — A Cheshire teacher has been temporarily removed from the building after a video of her expressing her personal opinion regarding the 2024 presidential election was posted on social media, according to Superintendent of Schools Jeffrey Solan.

The post has ignited a firestorm of comments on social media, and Solan said the school district has been “inundated with calls and emails predominately from people outside the Cheshire community.”

In the video circulating on social media, a woman is railing against voters who supported President-Elect Donald Trump in the election.

In a message sent to the Cheshire school community, Solan said someone had taken a video of “one of our teachers who shared what she intended to be a private message to her group on Snapchat.”

“She was expressing her personal opinion and not those of the Cheshire Public Schools,” Solan wrote in the message. “The person who filmed this then posted the video to social media outlets. The Cheshire Public Schools is reviewing this situation as a personnel matter and as such we are following all applicable laws.

“That being said, it is immediately clear that it will be impossible to conduct business as usual for our students and staff without temporarily removing the teacher from the building so we have done so until the outcome of the investigation. The wide spread of social media has protracted the process as we have been inundated with calls and emails from predominately from people outside the Cheshire community. Although we have received no direct threats to the school, we will have a police presence out of an abundance of caution.”

Solan also encouraged “civil conversation” and asked that everyone, “particularly adults work to try and bring down the temperature for the benefit of all Americans, but especially our students.”

Cheshire police confirmed Tuesday that the department is investigating the social media post, which included threatening language.

“Upon becoming aware of the nature of the post, an investigation was initiated,” Lt. Jeffrey Sutherland wrote in a news release. “This investigation is still ongoing and there is no further information available at this time.”
