Heat to Affect Cheshire Air Quality Today
A cooling center will help residents beat the heat today.

While many Cheshire residents have air conditioning and will be able to stay inside and stay cool, the town has opened a free cooling center today at the until 8:30 p.m. for those who may not have access to air conditioning.
The National Weather Service reported this morning that another day of excessive heat and humidity is forecast for all of Connecticut and much of New England today. Residents can expect record breaking heat with actual temperatures from 95 – 100 F across most of the state. Heat Index Temperatures (how hot it feels) will be between 100 – 110 F today, the weather service reports.
In addition, air quality alerts have also been issued for all of Southern Connecticut from 11:00 a.m. this morning until 11:00 p.m. tonight. The federal Environmental Protection Agency predicts the air today in New Haven County will be unhealthy for sensitive groups. The "Air Quality Index" shows people with lung disease, older adults and children are at a rist of exposure to high ozone levels today.

“A few simple steps can greatly reduce heat-related issues, especially for the elderly, the very young and people with respiratory ailments who are more susceptible to the effects of high temperatures,” Governor Dannel P. Malloy said in a statement.

- Slow down, and avoid strenuous activity.
- Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing. Light colors will reflect heat and sunlight and help maintain normal body temperature. Protect your face with a wide-brimmed hat.
- Drink plenty of water regularly and often, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
- Limit intake of alcoholic beverages. They can actually dehydrate your body.
- Eat well-balanced, light, regular meals.
- Stay indoors as much as possible.
- Do not leave pets outside for extended periods. Make sure pets have plenty of drinking water.
- Check on family, friends, and neighbors regularly.
