Macy’s To Lay Off Nearly 1K Workers, Close Facilities In Cheshire
The retail giant has announced plans to close its facilities in Cheshire and lay off nearly 1,000 workers.
CHESHIRE, CT — Macy’s has announced plans to close its two facilities in Cheshire and lay off nearly 1,000 workers by the end of August.
In a WARN notice sent Tuesday to the Connecticut Department of Labor and Cheshire Town Council Chairman (Mayor) Peter Talbot, Macy’s said its fulfillment center buildings located at 475 Knotter Drive and 181 West Johnson Ave. in Cheshire are closing and 993 full-time and part-time positions are being eliminated.
The layoffs are scheduled to take place between March and August, according to the notice.

“A small number of Maintenance and Asset Protection colleagues have been advised they will remain employed through April,16 2027 to handle the decommissioning process,” Macy’s human resources managers wrote in the notice.
Two employees at the Cheshire facility who provide services to Bloomingdale’s for Bloomingdale’s Photo Studio are also being laid off in March, according to the notice.

“Information about severance and other benefits will be made available to impacted employees as well as information about the opportunity to transfer to open positions in nearby Macy’s locations,” the WARN notice states. “Macy’s colleagues have no bumping rights. Should an employee be re-hired by Macy’s at a later date, service date, pay rate and benefits will be in accordance with then-existing policies and practices. No employees are represented by a union.”

Macy’s also announced this week plans to lay off an additional 57 employees at its South Windsor distribution facility, expanding on a previously announced round of more than 100 permanent job cuts and clearing the way for a full shutdown of the site.
South Windsor’s latest layoffs are expected to be completed by March 14, according to the notice.
