Puppets go National in Cheshire

A celebration at Artsplace for the National Day of Puppetry.

You have to hand it to Lionheart Puppet Company for its production of "Jack Tuesday: Fairy Tale Investigator." It may have more puns and rhymes in its script than any hour-length producton ever written.

Here's a sample:

  • Sheeps fleeced while peep sleeps
  • Big "Brad" Wolf
  • Three Pigs Building and Construction

Puppeteer Matthew Leonard of Vernon performed his punny show at  Sunday in celebration of the National Day of Puppetry. Three puppet making workshops were also offered through the Connecticut Guild of Puppetry.

The free event was held in memory of Sterling Jewett of Cheshire who died last year at the age of 95. His daughter, Lynn Jewett Voelker, said her father was himself a puppeteer and musician. "He was a 'jack of all trades,'" she said.

Sterling Jewett was an original member of the Cheshire Performing and Fine Arts Committee which supports Artsplace and Cheshire Youth Theater. He was also a founder of the puppet guild.
