Special Olympics, Cheshire Parks and Recreation Seek Volunteers
Volunteers are needed to work with local athletes of all abilities.

CHESHIRE, CT – Special Olympics Connecticut is teaming up with Cheshire Parks and Recreation to better serve local athletes of all abilities and provide them with year-round opportunities to train and compete in sports with their peers. The two organizations are working together to organize a group of volunteers who will help meet the ongoing needs of the Special Olympics Cheshire local program. Special Olympics aims to inspire inclusion and acceptance for people with intellectual disabilities through sports and helps participants improve their skills, self-esteem and health on and off the playing field. Barbara Costello will be taking on the role of Special Olympics Cheshire Local Coordinator. In this position, she will lead and oversee the community Special Olympics program.

Barbara began working for Cheshire Parks and Recreation at the community pool and has served as the part-time Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator for the past six years. Previously, she worked at the Institute of Living for eight years, where she provided recreation programs for young adults and children. Costello graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with a degree in Recreation and Leisure studies and a concentration in Therapeutic Recreation.
