Blight Stick Awaiting Further Review (Blight Poll)

Danbury wants to create enforceable fines for people who ignore blight problems on their property, but the city will take time for further review before making changes to its blight ordinance.

Danbury sent its proposed blight ordinance back to the drawing board Tuesday night, because Connecticut will revise its blight laws in October.

The City Council asked for further review to make sure Danbury's proposed blight ordinance, as proposed, will work properly and legally with the new state law.

"We have to put teeth in the housing blight ordinance," said Senior Advocate Lynn Waller of Highland Avenue. "Now the UNIT has to return over and over again to some properties."

Danbury's UNIT, the Unified Neighborhood Inspection Team, enforces the city's blight rules.

President Joe Cavo explained to the council that since the City Council subcommittee met on the blight ordinance, the city learned the state changed its blight laws.

Cavo said Danbury wants to make sure the new ordinance for Danbury is in line with the new state law. The new state law takes effect in October, so rather than pass one new law in June, and a second in October, Cavo said the city should get it right and do it once.

The ordinance was sent back to the ad hoc committee for review.
