Fire Reported At Former Stop & Shop Building In Danbury

The fire was upgraded to a second alarm. Both Brookfield and Bethel's fire departments responded to the call.

DANBURY, CT — The Danbury Fire Department - CT said it responded to the former Stop & Shop building at 72 Newtown Road, for a reported fire on Saturday night.

At 10:32pm the Danbury 911 Dispatch Center notified the Danbury Fire Department of a fire alarm at 72 Newtown Road, the former Stop and Shop building.

Lt. Jason Biroscak reporting a working fire and the call was upgraded to a full First Alarm assignment, officials said.

"The initial responders found a fire in a large walk-in refrigeration area, extending up into the roofing system of the building," fire officials said. "Due to the size of the building and potential spread of the fire, the Stony Hill Volunteer Fire Company and the Brookfield Volunteer Fire Company were requested to respond to the scene with their Aerial Ladders as Incident Commander/Deputy Chief Bernie Meehan requested a Second Alarm."

Chief Richard Thode and Assistant Chief William Lounsbury also responded.

"The fire progression was slowed down by the fire sprinklers within the building, however firefighters still had to operate hoselines in the building and conduct overhaul operations to fully extinguish the fire," fire officials said.

One firefighter suffered a very minor laceration, but did not require transport.

The Danbury Public Works, Danbury Water Department, Danbury Police, and the Danbury Emergency Management were also on scene to assist. The fire is under investigation by the Danbury Fire Marshals Office.
