Danbury FD Tackles Hazardous Propane Leak At Country Club

Firefighters from multiple departments contained a hazardous propane leak at Lake Waramaug Country Club after a 2,000-pound tank tipped over

DANBURY, CT — Firefighters from the Danbury Fire Department and multiple local departments responded to a hazardous propane leak at the Lake Waramaug Country Club on Thursday morning after a large propane tank became dislodged and began leaking gas near the clubhouse and nearby residences.

The Danbury Fire Department was requested to assist by Litchfield County Dispatch at 9:28 a.m. as part of Connecticut’s Region 5 Hazardous Materials Team, a specialized response unit composed of firefighters from Danbury, Waterbury, and Torrington.

According to officials, a 2,000-pound propane tank had rolled onto its side due to soft ground conditions, causing a significant gas release. While the HazMat team was en route, firefighters from Washington, Kent, Northville, Bantam, and Warren deployed more than 1,000 feet of hose and used water streams to disperse the propane cloud.

The response effort included assistance from propane contractors and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. Firefighters and technicians worked to close the tank’s valves, stopping the leak, while securing the tank with plastic and wooden chocks to prevent further movement.

Mutual aid agreements between fire departments ensure sufficient personnel and equipment are available for complex incidents such as hazardous material leaks, officials said. Region 5 HazMat provides specialized emergency response for 43 towns, spanning from Salisbury to Naugatuck and Ridgefield, using trained personnel and equipment from Danbury, Waterbury, and Torrington.
