“Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody.”— Jane Jacobs

Each year in May, people around the world "walk" their neighborhoods in celebration of Jane Jacobs (b. May 4, 1916 - d. 2006), an urbanist and activist whose writings championed a fresh, community-based approach to city design and building. She had no formal training as a planner, and yet her 1961 treatise, “The Death and Life of Great American Cities”, introduced ground-breaking ideas about how cities function, evolve and fail. An international program of the non-profit Center for the Living City, a Jane Jacobs Walk is an informal sharing of hidden treasures, historic notes, tasty bites, and friendly chat. Last year, twenty folks "walked" Downtown Danbury and uncovered spaces and places they never knew existed - even in their own immediate neighborhoods. This year, marking the 100th anniversary of her birth, three Jane Jacobs Walks will be hosted, on Saturdays, May 28th, June 4th, and June 11th. Sponsored by the Danbury Cultural Commission and CityCenter Danbury, all Walks are Free to the public.
Guided by Downtowner Ted Killmer, who both lives and works in CityCenter, and including such Downtown sites as @287 Gallery & Meeting Place, the Danbury Museum & Historical Society, and the Danbury Music Centre, as well as Downtown eateries and shops, the Walks will cover the south end on Saturday, May 28th, the north on Saturday, June 4th, and Main Street on CT Open House Day, Saturday, June 11th. All Walks begin at 1:00 p.m., meeting at Library Plaza (Main & West Streets) and are approximately two hours in length. As much as possible, stops are wheelchair accessible, are family and dog friendly, and do not require difficult climbs.
Attendance is limited. Reservations are required. RSVP to dishliving@gmail.com with your name, the number in your party, and a phone contact to confirm. "It's the DisH," says Ted Killmer, "Downtown is Happening! Oh, and wear comfortable shoes and bring your camera."
