NY State Police Log: Danbury Diamond Swap

New York State Police charged a Danbury woman with swapping an $8,000 diamond with a fake. She was held on ICE detainer for being in U.S. illegally.

A 37-year-old woman stole a diamond from an $8,000 platinum diamond engagement ring in a South Salem home she was cleaning, then replaced it with a phony diamond, New York State Police said Tuesday.

Monica Ferreira Lopes, of 10 Park Ave., Danbury, was arrested on Jan. 31 and charged with third-degree grand larceny, a felony. Lopes was arraigned before a local town justice and taken to the Westchester County Jail on $10,000.00 bail.

Lopes allegedly removed the diamond ring and altered it on Dec. 30. She was employed by Grasso Cleaning, a maid service in Danbury. She is also being held on an immigration detainer from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement. State police said she is a Brazilian national in the U.S. illegally.

Lopes is due to appear in Lewisboro town court on Feb. 7.
